"What Happens in the Garage, Stays in the Garage"

Turnpike Music Garage offers private musical instrument lessons on all instruments for students of all ages. Our school is a modern, safe facility where students learn to play their chosen instrument in a fun, supportive environment.

PHILOSOPHY

We call ourselves an "exploit the enthusiasm" school. We try to understand what the student is excited or enthusiastic about his or her chosen instrument, and try to fuel that enthusiasm throughout the learning process. We'll start a student off learning some simple modern songs, which helps prove to the student they "can" do it. Then we'll slowly add the music theory and technology as their skills develop. This hybrid approach helps to ensure that the student continues to enjoy the learning process, and is excited about putting in the extra work that is always required to master their instrument.

APPROACH

Every student is different and learns differently. One student may have an easier time being shown while another student will understand explanation. One student may struggle with mechanics while another student may not. It is our job as instructors to discover how a student learns and processes information, and then tailor our teaching model to present the information in a way the student more easily understands. This approach also helps the student develop confidence that they can learn their chosen instrument.

SUPPORTING SCIENCE

Most parents have heard that learning to play a musical instrument at a young age helps academically, specifically math skills. There is growing evidence, however, that learning to play a musical instrument wires the brain differently. Concepts like being able to think "outside the box" and problem-solving drawing from unrelated experiences are essentially hard-wired in! Please check out these references:

TEACHERS

Our music teachers subscribe to our philosophy of striving to make the musical instrument learning experience fun and rewarding for the student. Many of our instructors are accomplished musicians in their own right, and teach as a way of having a positive, productive influence on the next generation of musicians. Several of our instructors teach in public school systems in the area, and enjoy the one-on-one teaching experience our school offers. All of our instructors are experienced and qualified, and could teach anywhere. They choose to teach here because of our philosophy, our approach, and our commitment to music education. It's a great fit!

INSTRUMENTS

We're serious when we say that we teach every instrument. Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drums and Piano for sure. Violin, Viola & Cello? Absolutely! What about Saxophone, Clarinet, Trumpet, Flute or Trombone? Of course! Hmmm...bet we don't teach Steel Drum, Ukulele, Mandolin, or Banjo? You'd lose that bet. When we say we teach all instruments, we mean it!

SCHEDULES

While it is true that we can provide music instruction on any instrument, certain instruments are more popular than others, and therefore occupy a larger portion of our lesson schedule.

LESSON POLICY

We strive to offer an enriching and enjoyable music education experience at affordable rates. We can achieve this by creating an environment where the teacher can focus on teaching, while we take care of the business aspects. It's a balance that works to everyone's benefit, but one which must have some rules to work properly, so here goes:

  • Lesson Packages
    • Lessons are sold in packages of 4, 8 and 13, representing one, two, or three month commitments.
    • One month is the minimum lesson commitment.
    • Discounts are offered for longer term commitments.
    • Lesson packages must be purchased in advance.
  • Lesson Schedules and Cancellations
    • Lessons are private, one-on-one with your teacher.
    • Lessons are 1/2 hour long and are generally scheduled once per week.
    • Your lessons are scheduled in advance. If you know in advance that you will be away for any scheduled lesson, we will book around that lesson and it will not be on the schedule for the week in question.
    • Your lesson day, and time is yours for as long as you maintain your commitment. We will not arbitrarily change your lesson day or time without your knowledge or consent.
    • Students pay for scheduled lessons whether they are taken or not, with some exceptions:
      • If your lesson day falls on a Holiday which we observe, the lesson is not scheduled for that day.
      • If your teacher calls out, and we are not able to arrange a substitute teacher, you are not charged for the lesson and the lesson is added to the end of the contract.
      • If we decide to close for any reason (inclement weather, store sponsored event, etc) you are not charged for the lesson and the lesson is added to the end of the contract.
      • We allow one "wildcard" reschedule every 6 months. If the student must miss a scheduled lesson for any reason whatsoever, with or without notice, we will allow the lesson to be added to the end of the contract without charge. Once the student has used the wildcard within the 6-month period, a lesson charge will apply for any subsequent cancellations.
      • Wildcard reschedules do not accumulate.
